You just can't go past really good knitting books!
Every serious knitter I know has at least a small collection of books about knitting. Books about different knitting techniques (aran knitting, fair isle knitting etc), books with a variety of knitting stitch patterns or books with how to instructions or frequently asked questions.
My personal collection includes all of the books in this section and so I can personally recommend them.
